Chapter 15

“DO NOT RETREAT!” the soldier shouted loudly through the radio. “Hold the line! Reinforcements are on their way!”

He threw the device onto the table, looked at the map, and thought for a few seconds.

The deadies seemed to be coming out of every nook and cranny. The weapons that had amazing effects during the first days were becoming weaker and weaker every day. Now, to kill even a low-level monster with a machine gun, you would have to unload nearly the whole magazine right into their heads.

But before one bullet could have gone through two at a time.

“Dammit, where are they coming from?” The soldier slammed his hand on the table and grabbed the radio again. “Winker, report.”

A voice began chattering through the speaker. The boy on the other end of the line was reconnaissance, working with a drone right now, constantly running across new packs of zombies that were gradually combining into a single massive horde.

It was exactly that that the guy was talking about, also reporting an approximate number of mutants that reached up to the hundreds.

“Goddamn…” The man, exhausted, blurted into the phone upon receiving the information. He was all too well aware that it would be useless to try to defend themselves, and the only chance they had for survival was to retreat right away. No, not even retreat. Just flee. Plus, he would have to send a few divisions to certain death, otherwise even the remnants of the army that had he had managed to keep alive until now would be utterly annihilated.

He spent some time sitting in silence, staring emotionlessly at the wall, exhausted.

He knew how badly he had screwed up when he decided not to use System items, preferring instead their trusty old firearms.

It was funny just to think of his soldiers shooting the zombies with bows like aborigines. And in close combat there was a high risk of them getting wounded and turning into mindless walking murder machines.

But now, after watching so many videos about Systemniks, and when their firearms had started breaking down more and more often, he had come to the realization…

SHHSCHHCH

“Motherf*cker!” shouted the soldier, realizing that only static could be heard on the radio now. “Work, you obsolete piece of shit!”

He tried jiggling the antenna, smacking the radio a couple of times too, but he couldn’t manage to get the thing to connect like that.

He got out of his chair and walked towards the exit, shouting at the careless radio operator as he went. He was a boy of about twenty standing at the entrance to the room. He immediately ran off to fix the radio, but after five minutes all he left, shrugging.

“It’s dead…”

“I’ll show you dead! I need a connection right now!” The man was red with anger, but after a few seconds he started to calm down. “F*ck it, give me your phone.”

But he couldn’t call with the cell phone either. The phone was acting strange, first ringing for a long time, then some more static, and in the end it just shut off.
